With Netflix’s Marvel deal coming together nicely, I decided to write an entry talking about what I would like to see in the four 13 episode individual stories, and one 13 episode Defenders series. Which, to be honest should either be called Heroes for Hire, or Marvel Knights

Charlie Cox has officially been announced as the blind, super-powered ginge, Matt Murdock. To be honest, this is better casting that I was expecting. Then again, it is a Marvel series on Netflix. So far, Netflix had only had one werewolf themed dud in its original series. That aside, Charlie was fantastic on Boardwalk Empire, and he was charming as hell in the criminally underrated adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Stardust. I feel that he will do the character justice (pun, ha). With this announcement came another reveal–the show will take place in a modern setting that showcases the street level heroics of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). This means that we will be seeing a gritty world of heroes that work in the shadows cast by the larger-than-life heroes. Wife the Alien attack on NYC, this means we will more than likely see augmented foes in a post-Avengers New York. There couldn’t be four people better suited for this than the Heroes for Hire…erm…and Daredevil.

Now, if you have read my treatment for the upcoming Batman/Superman film, you’re familiar with the whole corporate villain (Luthor) snatching up and expirementing with Alien tech and secretly selling some of it to the highest bidder (outside of the US Government). The story for this world could be similar. We could have Wilson Fisk (Kingpin…SPOILERS) doing the same. He could be stealing the tech and creating weapons, or augmentations and using them to secure the city for himself. This would be a nice way to reintroduce both Fisk and Murdock. Now, if we really want to get crazy, we can have the other Hero’s villains be working with Fisk. Each could be responsible for a Borough while Fisk sits on his throne in Manhattan. I’m thinking Purple Man (Bronx), Leland Owlsley(Brooklyn), the Enforcers (as Fisk’s go-between for each of his generals), Constrictor(Queens), and Crusher Creel (Staten Island–too small to screw up). This would set up a nice reveal at the end of Jessica Jones (give her The Enforcers as a lead to Owlsley, who in-turn gives up Fisk). I would love to see each of the heroes show up in other’s series. Jessica and Luke would flirt (Obviously, they’re married in the comics), Luke is best friends with Danny Rand. Hell, the only person that shouldn’t show up in any significant way (other than being talked about) is Daredevil. The Lawyer Matt Murdock should know Jessica, but that’s it.

We would need origins to be shown. Obviously, we all know Daredevil’s origin. We can show it in the first episode (the same with Jessica’s). Luke’s should be a major arc in his story. Have him shown as a troublesome, but good man in the first episode, his arrest at the end, trial and sentencing with flashbacks to his childhood in the second, and have the third and fourth deal with his time in prison and his offer being made at the end of the fourth. The fifth could be spent in a dream state reliving moments from his youth and at the end, he wakes up, and at first, no sign of powers. He gets his sentence shortened to a few months and he is let out. Then, a few weeks pass and he starts experiencing busts of strength and invulnerability. The last 5 episodes could be him coming to terms with it and chasing down Purple Man after he forces a kid Luke knows to kill someone or something.

The most interesting should be Danny Rand’s. I was thinking about maybe showing it in flashbacks throughout the first 5 episodes, but I think it should be shown as a linear story that jumps forward by five years to present day around the sixth episode. They should take his story straight from Brubaker’s amazing Immortal Iron Fist from ’06-’09. The story is so rich and perfect that you can make the ENTIRE series about that. Hell, if you want, you can use Brubaker’s run from Daredevil. Marvel should just adapt EVERYTHING that Brubaker has done. The Winter Soldier made a ton of cash for them and that was a Brubaker creation.

Now that we have seen the direction they are going with these Netflix shows, we can rest a bit easy knowing that the stories will at least be interesting. I just hope this bit of fantastic casting wasn’t a fluke and we get terrible actors for everyone else. I’m hoping for the best, and expecting to be surprised. Oh, and one more thing! If we wind up getting Bullseye rebooted as well, I hope they give us the homicidal maniac from the comics. It isn’t catering to any demographic or ratings board, it is a TV show on a paid service. As long as Disney has the balls to trust them with their properties, we have a chance of seeing some great ART. They seem to have hit the nail on the head with all-but-voice casting(poor Rocket) with Guardians of the Galaxy (they even have Nowhere in the trailer). These should be a great little ride into the darker part of the Marvel Universe.

Batfleck Rises!

Zack Snyder released the first picture of Ben Affleck in his Batman costume. Here it is:

Image

I’ve shared the original, with a lightened version below to show detail in the suit.

You see that? That is Batman. Not any Batman, mind you, but MY Batman. That costume clearly has a few things going for it. Not only do you have the short ears, but also a large, bulbous Batsymbol on his chest. It looks like Jim Lee (the artist who draws my favorite version of Batman–“my” Batman) and Frank Miller’s The Dark Knight Returns. I can’t help but see a bit of Justice League 3000 in the symbol as well. The suit is right out of the New 52, but the key features that I have mentioned are seemingly cherry-picked for optimum fangasms. The internet exploded when that picture was shared. With good read, too. That picture is used to vindicate the supporters and silence the baseless hatred. You know what else? The Batmobile looks damn-near perfect as well. It is like they fully realized the car from the highly-anticipate Arkham Knight. It is clearly a one-seating cockpit style Batmobile, and I think that is perfect. In fact, everything about this is perfect. Why? Well, not only does it combine everything I wanted from a previous post into an almost perfect Batsuit, but it also confirms that Affleck is a fantastic match for what Batman is supposed to look like. The jawline is the thing that strikes me. If you think about it, all of the actors who have worn the cowl in the past have done so in a ill-fitting manner. Keaton’s was too loose, The sides of Kilmer’s looked stange (his lips were too big as well), Clooney’s costume had MANY problems, and Bale’s face was too “fat”– making it look like the cowl was two sizes too small. Affleck’s chin looks great and the entire suit looks like it came out of an Arkham game. The New 52 piping is fantastic and the “always flexed” look of the muscles and veins plays well to intimidate criminals. This is the costume of a man that has been fighting crime for ten years. He knows what will work, what is comfortable, and what is perfectly armored. The costume designers should be proud. Very proud. Now, if only the writing is as good as this costume. I think we are in for something fantastic.

Oh! I also think that they are going to introduce Wonder Woman as an ambassador from Themyscera. She shows up to reveal their existence to the world to let Earth know that they are here to help defend it in the wake of Zod’s attack. I would also bet that, like my Metallo prediction, Cyborg will have been injured in Metropolis and his father was forced to build him a body in S.T.A.R. Labs there using Kryptonian tech. Think of the New 52 origin for his character, but with Krypton instead of Apokolips.

More Casting Rumors?!

With the talk of yet ANOTHER member of the Justice League being rumored in the new Superman vs. Batman film, I thought it would be cool to think up ways that the heroes and metahumans could appear without having to explain EVERYTHING. Keep the same origin premise, just tweak it to keep it grounded. As for the members of the League, I’ve listed them below with the style costumes I’d like to see in the film: I don’t have a problem with the appearances if other characters. It doesn’t mean they’ll all have substantial roles. So far I feel they will just be cameos that lead to something larger.
Image
Wonder Woman: in light of the world threatening Kryptonian battle, a hidden island paradise sends a ambassador to protect the world of man. This can be shown on the news. Hell, Clark could even cover the story as a subplot.

Image
Batman: I’ve already stated what I think this will be–it’s posted on this blog. The costume should be a cross between the above and the New 52 look
.
Aquaman: if he does show up, it’ll a be to complain about the destruction if Atlantis by the terraforming machine. He will more than likely think it was a man-made machine. Most likely, he will be manipulated iti this by Orn. Keep the New 52 Look.

The Flash: the machine’s destruction caused Barry Allen to be doused in chemicals in his lab and an electrical current from said machine strikes him. It gives him his powers. Keep the New 52 look.

Cyborg: the destruction caused by the machine gives him his injuries. His father, working for Lex Corp steals machinery that is being used to create Metallo to build Cyborg. (If you read my prediction/treatment you’ll understand the Metallo reference). Keep the New 52 Look (post-Forever Evil)

Image
Green Lantern: Hal is in deep space when the Guardians sense a massive disturbance on Earth, they send a new ring to the sector and it chooses John Stewart. Laugh, but the whole Corps showing up wouldn’t be too far off. An extinct species shows up on a recently incorporated planet with MASSIVE power levels? The corp would investigate. While I like the traditional GL uniform for John, I think he should customize his look a bit (being a Marine, he is the only GL that doesn’t really customize himself). Any of the three would work well.

Image
Martian Manhunter: Seeing another powerful alien, he comes out if hiding to aid humanity. We could say that he has been on Earth since the 1930s after a scientist accidentally transported him here. Keep his origin, and keep his New 52 look.

They can even say that the machine has caused humanity to mutate. It gave certain humans powers as a result if the tech going into the atmosphere and the yellow sunlight activates it. It could be the cause if meta humans and the resulting influx if heroes/villains. Superman literally CREATES the DC Universe and Batman suddenly has to deal with more than corrupt city officials, mobsters and costumed idiots. Of course, this doesn’t mean that you make ALL metahumans a result of the machine, but make the influx a problem for humanity. So much so, that we have heroes popping up everywhere to help. A league needed to be created to deal with another threat. A distant war mongering “god” has noticed an influx of superbeings on a distant mudball. He thinks he can use these metahumans as a cheap and dirty army to be bred and used in his war machine. That alien’s name? Darkseid. Boom! You have your justice league film.
